About the Author

Gaurab Dasgupta is a blue-blooded 70’s child, born late into the turbulent political decade in Delhi, India. This quiet and introspective child with a strong will to succeed, learned to embrace art, music and sports as he grew up in a new world of challenges.

Gaurab is not, by any means, your average born-to-the-inkpot writer goaded by a passion for words. The urge to write hit this young author rather late, following the cathartic departure of his guru, friend and mentor, his father, in 2021. In April 2021, while the global travel lockdowns were still in effect, his father (Bapi) passed away in India. Being the only child, he simply could not accept the notion that he could not be around to bid his Bapi a final adieu. This unfulfilled void took hold of his heart, spurring on a growing need to relive precious moments, to try and recapture the emotional journey with the man who molded his very being so effortlessly. ‘Route 78 – A Road Full of Memories’, a memoir, was his first book.

At 45, and now on his second book, for Gaurab, life has found its own wonderful route, taking him from an inanimate intelligent machine to an animated willful pen. The man has seen and traveled many shores gathering experiences and simple wisdoms across India and the Arab nations. He spent the first decade of his professional life in India and later relocated to the Middle East in 2012.

For this creative nerd who works in marketing by day in Riyadh while his family stays in India, time is never a constraint in picking up something new. His tryst with storytelling is his own way to underline that age has little or nothing to do with molding a new more interesting version of the self. His distance from his home country that evokes nostalgia, his interactions with the unknown that bring alive a desire to seek, his disappointments with his life chances and his undying faith in humanity, have all helped shape this oddball mix of spicy tales, woven with a lot of love and goodwill.

With ‘Jhalmuri: Embracing Life’s Unpredictable Flavours’, the author wishes to share small, everyday insights and simple truths, which he hopes will help his readers and followers to savour and live up to every moment, may they be hot, sour, bitter or sweet. Much like the iconic Jhalmuri snack, which takes its eternal place among the liveliest street foods of the world, as the one sprinkled with the real ‘Spice of Life’!

Route 78 - A road full of memories

Please do not read this book as great literary work. Please do not read this book as great work of fiction. Please do not read this book as a gig guide on parenting, nor an inspiring telling of life’s challenges…

It is a simple narrative of a simple family, with simple middle-class values, simple joys, and simple everyday challenges. It would delight me no end if you can find an association with your own story, somewhere inside these pages.

This book might nudge you to thank your parents more often, to spend that extra weekend with them, and go on that holiday more often. I give you my personal story, a humble gift to anyone who wishes to borrow from its pages.
